SEBUYAU (Nov 23): Rampant vandalism of government utility assets has caused millions of ringgit in losses, particularly affecting electricity, water, and telecommunication services in Sarawak, said State Utility and Telecommunication Minister Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi.

He said the recurring incidents of vandalism not only result in financial losses but also disrupt the daily lives of residents.

“The Sarawak government has allocated substantial financial resources for the development of utilities and telecommunication facilities across the state.

“However, we are still facing major challenges, including frequent vandalism of government assets, especially those related to electricity, water, and telecommunications.

“We are not only experiencing millions in losses, but the most affected are the daily lives of the people who are disrupted by these harmful activities,” he said during the launch of the Samarahan Division electricity supply upgrading project at Dewan Kampung Sampat, Sebangan here.

Julaihi said his ministry, in collaboration with all agencies under its supervision, is actively conducting various campaigns and awareness programs throughout the division to curb these damaging activities.

“Therefore, I urge everyone to fully cooperate by reporting directly to the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) or relevant agencies if you observe any suspicious activity in your area.

“I also request full cooperation from everyone, especially the residents of Samarahan Division, particularly in granting access to agencies and contractors involved in this project to ensure it can be implemented successfully,” he added.

The RM150 million electricity supply upgrade project is scheduled to begin in December this year and is expected to be completed by 2028.

It will cover Samarahan, Asajaya, Sadong Jaya, Sebuyau, Simunjan, and Gedong, and involves the installation of Medium Voltage Covered Conductor (MVCC) lines, submarine cables across Sungai Batang Sadong, fiber optic lines, and transformer upgrades.

Once completed, the project is expected to improve electricity reliability, reduce equipment damage in homes and businesses, and support local economic growth, including job creation and opportunities for small-and-medium-sized enterprises.

At the event, Julaihi also conveyed community appeals for additional facilities, including a multipurpose sports arena and a new surau to replace the existing one.

He said the local residents requested a sports arena as a safe recreational space for children and the community, noting that the Sungai Sebangan, which used to serve as a natural swimming spot, is now inhabited by more crocodiles, limiting river access.

“The residents have proposed a multipurpose sports arena here, with an estimated cost of around RM10 million, which would serve not only Kampung Sampat but also nearby communities.

“In addition, a new surau is needed to replace the old one, which is on a small wakaf plot and is no longer adequate.

“These requests have been submitted by the village head for consideration by the Premier and relevant agencies,” he said.
