KUCHING (Nov 6): Two outlets of the same supermarket chain in Siburan and Serian have been found to be involved in electricity theft, leading to estimated monthly losses of about RM20,000.
The illegal activities were uncovered by Sarawak Energy Berhad’s (SEB) operations arm, Syarikat Sesco Berhad (Sesco).
In Siburan, Sesco’s meter inspection team uncovered concealed direct tapping cables hidden above the ceiling, bypassing the electricity meter and allowing the premises to draw power illegally from the main supply line.
At the Serian outlet, similar direct tapping cables were found hidden behind the signboard near the five-foot way.
“The inspection at the Siburan outlet revealed estimated monthly losses exceeding RM13,000. A subsequent inspection at the Serian outlet uncovered further losses of approximately RM6,800 per month,” SEB said in a statement.
It said the illegal connections were dismantled on-site and enforcement teams confiscated the tampering equipment.
Police reports have been lodged and investigations are underway under Section 33(5) of the Electricity Ordinance.
Offenders may face a fine of up to RM200,000 and/or up to five years in jail upon conviction.
“Electricity theft is not only unlawful but also poses severe safety risks. Unauthorised connections can cause electrocution, fires, damage to electrical appliances, and even loss of life.
“They also place undue strain on the power system, potentially disrupting supply to neighbouring premises,” warned SEB.
To strengthen its enforcement capabilities, SEB said Sesco’s meter inspection teams undergo continuous technical training to detect increasingly sophisticated theft methods.
These efforts are supported by ongoing investments in advanced detection technologies and real-time monitoring systems, it said.
SEB pledged to intensify enforcement operations, particularly in outstation areas and urged the public to report any suspicious activities related to electricity theft.
