KUCHING (Jan 27): Sarawak is set to roll out its new single water management entity, with its name and board of directors already in place, says Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi.

Speaking at the Ministry of Utilities and Telecommunications (MUT)’s event here today, the minister Julaihi confirmed that the entity, approved by the Sarawak Cabinet last year, would begin operations in the second quarter of this year.

“This initiative involves the integration of Kuching Water Board, Sibu Water Board, and LAKU Management Sdn Bhd into a single entity.

“The objective is to enhance the efficiency of water supply management throughout Sarawak,” he said.

Julaihi, nonetheless, emphasised that the integration would not disrupt the existing water supply services to the consumers.

He also gave assurance that the welfare of staff from the existing agencies would be a priority during the restructuring process, with options to be provided to all those involved in the three agencies so as to ensure fairness.

“The restructuring will only strengthen the system, ensuring better efficiency and reliability for the people of Sarawak.

“We are also refining the operational structure, human resources, salary schemes, and other aspects to ensure a smooth transition.”

Apart from that, Julaihi also said the legal framework was already in place to support the entity’s establishment.

“We have made significant progress. The name of the new entity and its board of directors have already been decided, but the formal announcement will be made by YAB Premier of Sarawak,” he added.

Later, when asked by reporters about the timeline, Julaihi said the MUT planned to launch the entity either at the end of this year’s first quarter, or at the beginning of the second quarter.

Julaihi also addressed concerns from the stakeholders, saying that any hesitation was due to a lack of understanding about the benefits of the integration.

“It’s natural for there to be questions, but I assure you that this change will lead to significant improvements.”

While declining to disclose some specific details, Julaihi reiterated that the new setting-up would provide a much-improved system compared to the current arrangement.

“I can confidently say this will be a far better structure for water management (in Sarawak).”

Julaihi thus called upon the stakeholders and the public to be patient, as further announcements, including the official launch date and additional details, would be made soon.

“The Premier will unveil the name and the full board of directors when the time comes. For now, we are focusing on laying the groundwork to ensure the entity’s success.

“This is a transformative step for water management in Sarawak, and we are committed to delivering the best for the people,” he said.
