KUCHING (Nov 25): Sarawak’s vast natural resources and innovative strategies in low-carbon energy production, carbon capture and storage (CCS), as well as renewable energy will help position both the state and Malaysia as global energy transition leaders, said the Premier.

Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said Sarawak’s vision for a low-carbon economy under the state’s Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 underscores its leadership in environmental sustainability while driving economic prosperity and social inclusivity too.

He pointed out Sarawak’s strengths as Malaysia’s top producer of natural gas, hydropower, and CCS potential, accounting for over 60 per cent of the nation’s gas production and 65 per cent of CCS capacity.

“These resources, coupled with initiatives like the Sarawak Gas Roadmap, position Sarawak as a key player in global decarbonisation,” he said at the launch of the inaugural Sarawak Gas Roadmap (SGR) Summit here today.

He also unveiled the Kuching Low-Carbon Hub, a transformative project aimed at expanding gas-based power generation, establishing low-carbon industrial clusters, and developing world-class CCS infrastructure.

The hub is projected to attract investments of up to RM200 billion while boosting regional connectivity and innovation.

“Our journey includes groundbreaking developments such as the Miri Combined Cycle Gas Turbine Power Plant and partnerships in offshore CCS, like the M3 depleted field project with Petronas and Japanese partners,” he said.

Apart from that, he also emphasised Sarawak’s hydropower capacity, which is projected to reach 15 gigawatts by 2035, enabling the export of green energy to neighbouring countries such as Singapore and Indonesia.

“By spearheading these initiatives, Sarawak aligns with Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap, contributing to economic growth, job creation, and environmental stewardship,” he said.

Hosting events such as the SGR Summit, he said reflect Sarawak’s commitment to positioning itself as a leader in Malaysia’s green energy sector, paving the way for a sustainable future while balancing economic growth with environmental responsibility.

“This is not just about Sarawak but about advancing Malaysia’s role on the global stage in energy transition and sustainability,” he said.

In his speech, Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Hamid Bugo emphasised the company’s role in reshaping Sarawak’s energy sector and unlocking its full potential for sustainable growth and innovation.

Over 500 delegates, including industry leaders, government officials, and academics gathered to discuss energy transition challenges and opportunities.

The summit featured key agreements between Petros and global players such as Sumitomo, Mitsubishi, and Woodside Energy, reinforcing international collaboration.
