KUCHING (Nov 25): The Sarawak Gas Roadmap (SGR) and Kuching Low-Carbon Hub are game-changers for energy future of Sarawak, says Minister of Utility and Telecommunications Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi.

He hails the initiatives as marking a transformative era, aligning with global clean energy demands and also Sarawak’s economic aspirations.

“These projects showcase Sarawak’s readiness to lead in low-carbon solutions and sustainable development, playing a crucial role in achieving the state’s high-income economy goal under Sarawak’s Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030,” he said in his speech for the SGR Summit 2024 launching ceremony in Sheraton Hotel here today.

Julaihi also said the SGR leveraged on the state’s natural gas resources as a foundation for economic growth, while balancing environmental responsibility.

“Central to the roadmap are four strategic gas hubs: in Miri, Samalaju, Bintulu, and Kuching, which will serve as energy distribution centres and industrial growth catalysts.”

The state minister also highlighted key projects such as the 500-megawatt Miri combined cycle gas turbine power plant, the Samalaju pipeline, the ‘Gas to Bintulu’ initiative, and the Kuching Low-Carbon Hub, all critical in positioning Sarawak as a regional energy hub.

“These infrastructure developments will attract significant investments, drive industrial growth, and generate high-quality jobs across Sarawak.”

Julaihi said the Kuching Low-Carbon Hub, in particular, would strengthen Sarawak’s leadership in renewable energy and decarbonisation, contributing to its goal of a low-carbon economy.

In this regard, Julaihi also emphasised the importance of inclusive growth, ensuring that the benefits of resource development would be shared with Sarawakians.

He also said through these initiatives, Sarawak would be poised to support regional decarbonisation efforts and achieve a sustainable energy ecosystem.

“This roadmap is about creating a legacy of economic prosperity and environmental responsibility for future generations,” he said.

Julaihi also reaffirmed his ministry’s commitment to ensuring the safe and timely implementation of projects, while fostering investor’s confidence.

“These milestones are not just about infrastructure developments, but also serve as a foundation for Sarawak’s long-term resilience and leadership in energy transition.”

Also present were Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg who officiated at the event, together with the Deputy Premiers Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.
